Abstract

We extend a standard Random Utility Model (RUM) of migrations to directly account for the characteristics of alternative destinations as determinants of migration decisions. We then estimate an empirical specification derived from the theoretical model, using a sample of migration flows from over 200 origin countries to 35 OECD destination countries between 2000 and 2021. Our results show that the characteristics of alternative destinations have an economically and statistically significant impact on migration choices.
